It is no longer enough to cite the works you consulted and compile them into a bibliography. It is just as important to document your approach to online research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should consider your approach before you even begin.  Waiting until you&#8217;re on your way makes it much harder for you later, and it slows you down &#8212; sometimes you cannot go back and reconstruct your search strategies because they changed iteratively over the course of many searches.  Don&#8217;t let this happen to you!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading has-custom-4-font-size\">Documentation standards<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Beginning in 2000, the Cochrane Organization recommended that specific search criteria be documented for every systematic review. The current edition of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cochrane.org\/authors\/handbooks-and-manuals\/handbook\/current\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.cochrane.org\/authors\/handbooks-and-manuals\/handbook\/current\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Cochrane Handbook<\/a> acknowledges one other standard as equivalent to their own<sup data-fn=\"0af5f372-6dca-4cdc-b4f6-9506610341a8\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#0af5f372-6dca-4cdc-b4f6-9506610341a8\" id=\"0af5f372-6dca-4cdc-b4f6-9506610341a8-link\">1<\/a><\/sup>: The PRISMA-S search standard (see More on PRISMA, below). Cochrane and PRISMA-S both require these pieces of information to consider an online search fully documented:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol style=\"padding-right:0;padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60)\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Name of each database searched<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Name of database platform if searching multiple databases simultaneously<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>List of any registries searched<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>List of any online or print resources browsed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If\/how citation searching was performed<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Names of individuals contacted directly for information<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any other resources searched<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Full search strategies, copied-and-pasted directly from each database<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any limits or restrictions that were applied<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any filters or hedges that were applied<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any previous searches that may have been modified and repurposed for this study<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Any updates applied to search strategies<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Dates all searches were run<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peer review of search strategies by other search experts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Total number of retrievals from each database<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tools and methods used to deduplicate result sets.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Many publishers today require full documentation of the online search strategies so that (1) reviewers and others can confirm your sources, and (2) your literature search can be re-run at later dates to find new articles that have been published since your study. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisma-statement.org\/extensions\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.prisma-statement.org\/extensions\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PRISMA Extensions<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisma-statement.org\/prisma-search\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.prisma-statement.org\/prisma-search\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PRISMA-S<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisma-statement.org\/protocols\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.prisma-statement.org\/protocols\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">PRISMA-P<\/a>, etc.) describe a set of minimum items to be included in all types of manuscripts. There are currently 16 PRISMA extensions, with another 13 extensions under development (as of 11 July 2025). PRISMA is discussed as an option for structuring your manuscript.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity is-style-default\" style=\"margin-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60);margin-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--60)\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tenets of Transparent Research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For transparency, your research should be repeatable, reproducible, and replicable.<sup data-fn=\"52a84d57-2295-46d0-bb7c-3137d680c30a\" class=\"fn\"><a href=\"#52a84d57-2295-46d0-bb7c-3137d680c30a\" id=\"52a84d57-2295-46d0-bb7c-3137d680c30a-link\">2<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Repeatable<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>You repeat an experiment when <em>you<\/em> conduct the same experiment multiple times using the same methods and the same data, <em>and<\/em> under the same conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Replicable<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Someone else<\/em> follows your experimental setup using the same methods and under the same conditions, and they obtain the same results as you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reproducible<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Someone else <\/em>can reproduce your experiment when they conduct research using different methods and under different conditions.
